Leading the praises of God
Music is an integral and vibrant aspect of our worship service at Holy Cross. Our music program is lead by organist/choirmaster Brennan Szafron. Choir members are parishioners who generously contribute their time and talents to serve God by leading the congregational hymns and service music. They also offer choral anthems from a diverse range of traditional and sacred music.
The parish choir provides music at the second/late worship service each Sunday morning, leading the service music and hymns and offering one or two choral anthems. The choir also sings at special Holy Day liturgies (Christmas and Holy Week), and offers occasional Choral Evensong services during the program year.
Rehearsals are on Wednesday nights, 7:00-8:30pm, in the choir room. Our choir members sing together, pray together, and laugh together. If you are interested in joining our choir, please contact Brennan Szafron at bszafron@holycrosstryon.org
The Evensong Choir is a group of adult choristers which sing Sunday afternoon sung evening prayer services two to three times a year for certain feast days (e.g. Saint Luke the Physician, St. Michael and All Angels Day). Rehearsals are held two to three weeks before these services, usually on Thursday nights. Although no audition is required to sing in the choir, basic music reading proficiency is required. The music is usually at a moderately difficult level and choristers are expected to learn the music on their own. This choir is open to anyone who attends any church. It’s Holy Cross’s closest thing to a “community choir."
Holy Harmony is an approximately eight voice a cappella ensemble which sings usually for non-Sunday services (e.g. Ash Wednesday and Easter Vigil). Sometimes they give concerts. While a core group has been established, occasionally there are openings within the ensemble. Strong vocal and musical skills are required to sing in Holy Harmony, since singers often sing by themselves on their parts.
