This includes those who greet, usher, acolyte, read scripture passages, lead prayers, and assist with communion. In addition, lay servers take communion to members of the Holy Cross community who are unable to attend services at the Church. Initial and refresher training is available to make sure that lay servers are comfortable with their roles. The lay servant in sacred liturgy is a ministry of the Christian church that goes back almost 2,000 years. From the first, the celebrant of the Liturgy had assistants...some attended to the vessels, others prepared the thurible with incense, or collected the gifts of the people to be used as the sacrificial elements (bread and wine), and others read lessons from Scripture and letters from the apostles. AS a lay minister, you share in this long, honorable and important tradition of the church. It is your duty to accept it responsibly..."that in all things, God may be glorified." {1 Peter 4:11} (excerpt from Serving Basics, The International Order of St. Vincent, Inc.)
